The Bihar & Jharkhand family of Canada

We are BAJCCA, the Bihar and Jharkhand Canadian Cultural Association: families from Bihar and Jharkhand across the Greater Toronto Area, keeping our faith, our language and our festivals alive together, a long way from home.

Who we are

One family, far from home

No one is a guest here. Each one of us is a host.

BAJCCA began the way most of our families began in Canada: a few households from Bihar and Jharkhand who did not want to keep Chhath alone. Today we are thousands, in Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto, Oakville, Milton, Hamilton and beyond, and BAJCCA is a registered non-profit, run entirely by volunteers.

We prepare the Prasad together, we cook and serve together, and we carry the cost together. Students who arrived last month sit beside grandparents who have been here for decades. Our children hear Chhath geet, eat Thekua made by their own families and learn where they come from.

Chhath Mahaparv

The four days that bring us home

Chhath Mahaparv is the most sacred time of our year. For four days the whole family prepares, prays and eats together at our own ghat in Mississauga.

Donate · your share in the seva

Every family carries a part

We prepare the Prasad together, we distribute it together, and we carry the cost together. A donation is your opportunity to be part of every Thekua shaped and every plate served. Families and businesses can also sponsor a day of Preeti Bhoj, the ghee for Thekua or the ghat.

Questions families ask

New here? Start with these

What families from Bihar and Jharkhand usually ask us when they first find BAJCCA.

Families with daura beneath the Lord Ram statue

Is there a Bihari and Jharkhandi community in Canada?

Yes, and it is bigger than most people expect. More than four thousand of us gather at the ghat for Chhath in Mississauga, from across the GTA and beyond.

A family at the Arghya pools

I just moved to Canada. Where do I start?

Join the WhatsApp group and introduce yourself. Families will answer your questions about housing, jobs and schools, and you will have people to celebrate Chhath with this November.

Friends and families together at the ghat

Is BAJCCA only for people from Bihar and Jharkhand?

Our roots are in Bihar and Jharkhand. Families from Purvanchal, spouses, friends and neighbours who love our festivals celebrate with us too.

Volunteers together in the Thekua tent

How can I help?

Give a night in the Thekua tent, serve Preeti Bhoj, help at the ghat or welcome families at the gate. Tick "Volunteer" in the membership form or say so in the WhatsApp group.

The organizing committee honoured on stage

Can my business sponsor?

Yes. Businesses sponsor a day of Preeti Bhoj, the ghee for Thekua or the ghat, and are thanked on stage at Arghya. Write to bajcamail@gmail.com.

Thousands of families at Sandhya Arghya

Can I get photos of my family?

Every photo here opens at full resolution, and we keep the originals in the BAJCCA photo archive. Ask in the WhatsApp group for your family's photos.
